So, it's been awhile since I posted anything, but I figured I would since I only have one more week here before I leave!!!! It's crazy to think that next week I will by on a plane heading for Rome. There are so many things to see and I just can't wait to explore this ancient historical city. One of the statues that I am most excited to see while I am in Rome is Bernini's Apollo and Daphne. This is one of my favorite pieces of art for several different reasons. First of all its a beautiful piece with crazy amount of detail. And second it tells the tragic love story of Apollo and Daphne. The story goes, that Apollo was shot by one of cupid's love arrows and he fell madly in love with Daphne, who was shot by one of Cupid's arrows as well, but this one caused her to refute the love of Apollo. As such, Apollo chased Daphne, and just before she was to be caught by him she prayed that she would be transformed. Her prayer was answered and she was changed into a tree right before Apollo could grab ahold of her. This statue does an excellent job of capturing the movement and emotion of that one instant.
